Performance Standardbreds was established in 1990 by a few Standardbred enthusiasts who realized the animal's enormous potential as a saddle horse. The Standardbred is one of the most versatile breeds by far. By age three, there are many already starting their second careers. Throughout their early years, the foundation has been established and now it's onwards and upwards for these athletic, sturdy, sensible horses. Jumping, dressage, endurance, and competitive trail - there really is no limit to what they can accomplish!
Recognizing the potential of and the need to give these horses no longer able to race new lives, Performance Standardbreds promotes the breed in a new and positive light. The Standardbred is a living reminder that it is both necessary and possible to pay back the debt that people have to equine athletes.
Performance Standardbreds gratefully acknowledges the support of Horse Racing Alberta and the Alberta Standardbred Horse Association in contributing to our efforts.
Our History
The first annual Performance Standardbred Horse Show was held in June of 1991. Classes included compulsory skills, jumping, barrel racing, pole bending, trail, driving, free style, and the champagne ride. From this annual show a team is chosen to compete at The Spruce Meadows Battle of the Breeds. In September 1992, Team Standardbred placed 3rd in a field of 15 breeds, a placing of which we are very proud, especially as the Standardbreds competing had very little prior experience in any of the events. What does that tell you about the Standardbred?
Since 1992 a Placement Program for horses retiring from the track was implemented to ensure many of them had the opportunity for new careers. Those horses deemed suitable in terms of soundness and temperment are purchased by the program and evaluated individually as to when they will be available for new homes. Horses may also be referred to the program by private owners , whereupon they will be assisted in placing their horses in suitable homes.
