First Doug Martin Memorial Award Winner Named

Doug Martin was an easily recognizable member of Performance Standardbreds even when he wasn’t wearing his cap that read “Lois’s Dad.”

Doug wore many hats. A tireless volunteer, he was always asking “What can I do to help?” He was the gadget guy, giving presentations on various items to keep riders and drivers safe and prepared — always of prime importance to him. His voice booming from the announcer’s booth was a staple at horse shows. Many visitors to the Standardbred booth at Spruce Meadows will remember a gelding named Dinky, thanks to Doug’s great joy in showing how Dinky loved mints. He was a dedicated champion for Performance Standardbreds and a true horseman. Read more


Growing Up with Standardbreds

In the late summer of 1977 I took my seven-month-old daughter to our first tournament at Spruce Meadows. I can still see the Spruce Meadows ticket dangling from the strap of her little pink overalls. We sat on blankets on the grass because there were no stands then and she played happily while I watched horses like Texas and The Flying Nun jump the huge outdoor course. Who would have thought that 30-odd years later thanks to Performance Standardbreds I’d be watching that baby, all grown up, riding her own horses at that same venue, also much matured. Read more
